Late last week, Square Enix announced that its beleaguered Live service game 2020, Marvel’s Avengerswill no longer receive new content or major updates after March 31. And all official support for the game will end September 30, 2023, with digital sales also ending on that date. While you can still play it offline and online with friends after those dates, it’s effectively game over for the struggling online action game. Still, even in death, developer Crystal Dynamics has just confirmed that the Spider-Man character will remain exclusive to the PS4 and PS5 versions.
This saga began when, shortly before the release of Marvel’s AvengersCrystal Dynamics announced that Spider-Man would be added to the game at a later date. However, the famous web-slinger would not come to the Xbox or PC versions. Instead, PS4 (and later PS5) players only would have access to the character. It took longer than expectedbut finally, in November 2021 Spider-Man appeared in PlayStation versions. At the time, fans speculated that it was because Spider-Man was owned by Sony and thus Spidey was only on PlayStation. (That’s not the case, as Sony simply owns the movie rights to the character.) But since then, the famous superhero has appeared in midnight suns on all platforms. So it’s not like Spider-Man can only exist on PlayStation consoles.
And even, Crystal Dynamics confirmed in a blog post on January 20 that Spider-Man still won’t be will arrive on Xbox or PC. That’s a shame! Even if the failed live-service game dies, none of Spidey’s corporate overlords can afford to let it swing free across all platforms for the few. avengers gamers there still enjoy the game.
my city reached out to Marvel, PlayStation, Square Enix, Embracer Group, and Crystal Dynamics for comment, but did not hear back before posting.
I already know people in comments or quote retweets will claim that Sony fully owns Spider-Man (it doesn’t) or that Sony can’t legally allow the character to appear on other platforms (he can). Yet he is in midnight suns, a game released on Xbox, PlayStation and PC. He is also in mobile games published on iOS, Android and PC.
So it’s entirely possible that Spidey could appear on other consoles if the people pulling the strings, doing the deals and making the contracts can accept it. But apparently no one cares enough avengers and his community to pull together one last gesture of goodwill for gamers and let the web hero show up on Xbox and PC. If you want to play the full version of the game after support ends in September, it looks like you need to own a PlayStation. Say it with me again: console-exclusive DLC sucks.
